Shared care schemes
Diabetic shared care
One of only two independent Optometric practices in the centre of Preston that is currently able to screen for diabetic retinopathy through the National Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Scheme.
The screening consists of taking retinal photographs through pupils that are dilated. The images can be compared to previous saved images and are then graded by the Optometrist to check for early retinal signs of diabetes.
Cataract shared care scheme
The optometrists in the practice are able to detect and advise about cataracts and will help you decide when it is best to be referred for cataract surgery. The referral can be made through the fast track cataract scheme, without having to go to the Doctor first.
MJ Ryan Eyecare is one of a limited number of practices that is accredited to assess patients after cataract surgery.
Low vision scheme
For people with visual problems that can not be fully corrected with spectacles or contact lenses, a low visual aid assessment enables the person to make optimal use of their remaining vision.
Originally organised by the Local Optical Committee and paid for by the health Authority, the low vision scheme enables people with poor sight to receive magnifying aids on permanent free loan. There are regular follow ups to allow the magnifier to be exchanged if the sight changes.
