Eye examinations

Optometrists Mike Ryan and Michelle Cole in one of the three consulting rooms

An eye examination is far more than just a simple test of your eyes' efficiency.

It is a thorough investigation of your eyes to determine how well you see and to detect any eye disorders early enough to prevent serious damage.

During the examination the Optometrist will check for :-

Myopia – shortsighted, spectacles are required to correct distance vision
Hypermetropia – longsighted, spectacles required to reduce eyestrain at near and sometimes in the distance
Astigmatism – Usually caused by an irregular curvature of the front surface of the eye
Presbyopia – progressive difficulty in reading close as the lens of the eye becomes more rigid, usually occurs after the age of 40.
Cataracts – this is where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy with age
Glaucoma  - where the pressure in the eye causes damage to the optic nerve
Macula degeneration – where  the photoreceptors in the retina are unable to regenerate leaving blind spots in the central vision.

Contact lens fitting and aftercare

Contacts
Soft contact lens

Contact lenses are a comfortable and convenient alternative to spectacles.

New materials and manufacturing techniques ensure many more people are able to enjoy the freedom from spectacles.

Contact lenses are now able to correct long and shortsightedness, astigmatism and reading difficulties with age (presbyopia)

Contact lens Fitting – after initial examination and measurements, trial lenses are used to show how comfortable they are and determine the best fit for your eyes.

Contact lens collection - You will be shown how to insert and remove the lenses and how to look after them. Most lenses fitted now are thrown away at the end of each day and therefore don’t need cleaning.

Aftercare – regular aftercare is advised to check the health of the front of the eye and check the continued suitability of the lenses.

Low vision assessment

After a full eye examination if spectacles or contact lenses are unable to give you the level of vision required for everyday tasks because of retinal injury or degeneration. A low vision assessment can be conducted to assess the suitability of increasing the magnification of the image on the retina by using hand, stand or spectacle mounted magnifiers

Stand magnifiers with detachable illuminating handles
Hand magnifiers, some with own illumination

OCT with retinal photography

OCTUsing state-of-the-art 3D Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), digital photographs and  three dimensional scans of the back of the eye allow us to assess the risks, or development, of a number of eye conditions.

Jackie Ryan explaining the OCT scan of a healthy macula

The scan is painless, simple and quick.

The stored images can be used in future visits to monitor minute but significant changes in the eye.
